Mission 23: Docuseries

The Need: More storytelling and behind the scene content. Content that fits multiple audiences - fans, students, recruits, new audiences, etc.

Role: Director, Videographer & Editor

The Idea: Follow the journey of the Men’s and Women’s basketball programs as they try a win another MAC championship

Pre-production: I outlined a three-part series showcasing games, practices, locker room, and other behind-the-curtain content. I worked with my social media intern to come up with questions to ask the players and questions for sit-down interviews. Each episode covered specific number of games with a quick turnaround edit. The coaches had final sign off.

Friction-point: Scheduling was a big obstacle since we started this during conference season. I worked with the teams’ director of operations to schedule with coaches and players.

Production: I shot practices, team dinners, locker room hangouts, and game footage throughout the months to capture the content needed to make each episode. A lot of the game-day coverage was locker room and bench footage. I interviewed multiple players and a coach for each episode. My video interns covered games throughout the season and were a large part of the in-game video content.

Post-production: Each episode had a quick turnaround. I worked with one of my video interns to edit game highlights that would be included in each episode. The goal of the edit was to tell a story and show the ups and downs of a long grueling season so the focus was on the interviews and behind the scenes. The game highlights helped move the story forward and showcased the wins.

Release: Short versions were released on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook with a link to the full episode on YouTube. Episodes were also shared on local sports network, BCSN.

Outcomes:

  • Over 4k views on YouTube and on social media channels.

  • More engaged audience and giving fans more of what they have been asking for.

  • High-quality recruiting material.

  • Introduced people to Toledo Athletics.
